London Broncos' Danyelle Shobanjo represented Nigeria at the first-ever TriNations Rugby League tournament held in Ghana in November.
The competition featured both men’s and women’s divisions, with national teams from Ghana and Nigeria competing alongside the international club side Roots Rugby from the United States.
Throughout the tournament, Shobanjo demonstrated her versatility by playing prop, second row and loose forward, contributing significantly with her physicality in both attack and defence and providing several try assists. She played for both Nigeria and Roots across their fixtures.
Results:
23/11: Ghana 8 - 42 Nigeria
26/11: Ghana 8 - 30 Roots
30/11: Ghana 0 - 38 Roots
Beyond the scorelines, the festival represented something larger. For Ghana, it showcased continued growth and development in rugby league, and marked a milestone as their first female referee gained international recognition from the IRL.
For Nigeria, who have now climbed to 12th in the IRL world rankings, and for players like Shobanjo, the event offered valuable international experience and exposure, contributing to the rising profile of women’s rugby league across Africa.
Congratulations to all those involved.
