Northern Championship Semi Final: London Broncos vs Salford Red Devils

By London Broncos Women

The London Broncos are heading to the Northern Championship Grand Final after a tense 22–10 victory over Salford Red Devils at Chiswick RFC. In a game packed with rain, defensive grit, big carries, and flashes of attacking brilliance, the Broncos booked their spot in the 28th September showdown versus Featherstone Rovers.

Handling proved difficult for both teams in the wet conditions, with strong defence playing its part. The Broncos held firm under heavy pressure on their own line for much of the second half as Salford chased an equaliser. A late try from London sealed the win and sparked the home celebrations.

The match kicked off with plenty of early intensity. London’s defensive line held firm, forcing errors from Salford and dominating territory. Rebecca Kemball, sponsored by South London Crabbitohs, got the scoreboard moving first, powering over for the opening try. Kathryn Salter, sponsored by Riley Bownes, added the extras to make it 6–0.

Salford hit back with a converted try to level the scores at 6–6 before the Broncos regained control. Brilliant hands from the Broncos’ backs saw Emily Bell, sponsored by Kev’s Place, dive over in the corner. Salter converted again, giving London a 12–6 lead at the break.

London started the second period with the same intensity. Nicole Kennedy, sponsored by Lee Bownes, marked her return with a charging solo run to score early after the break. Salford fought back and capitalised on a London error to score in the corner, reducing the gap to 16–10. But the Broncos’ defence stood tall during a tense period, forcing errors and keeping the visitors at bay.

With the clock running down, it was only fitting that Lauren Mueller, sponsored by Amapolas Bakery, capped a huge performance with a decisive try, stretching over the line to seal the victory. Salter coolly slotted her third conversion of the day to close out the scoring.

The Broncos were the stronger side overall but were tested throughout by the visitors. They’ll need to raise their game again in two weeks time as they push for promotion to the Super League.

Kathryn Salter, sponsored by Riley Bownes, was selected as Player of the Match by the opposition. Her composure under pressure, accuracy off the tee, and leadership around the park were instrumental in guiding the team through a tough semi-final.
