Northern Championship Round 4: London Broncos vs Castleford Tigers

By William Elvin

Broncos trampled Castleford Tigers to record their biggest win of the season, scoring sixteen tries in front of their home crowd.

London took control from kickoff, within ten minutes they were up 16-0, Nicole Kennedy set the tone early finishing off two neat tries.

Whilst Tigers were able to score in the 11th minute through Kasalaini Gaunavinaka scrambling past the line on last tackle, the lead was cut to 16-6 but the remainder of the proceedings was all London.

Shortly after conceding, Broncos rallied to crush their opponent’s hopes of staying in the game as Katie Wallis drew out the Castleford defence before laying it off for Lauren Mueller to touch down.

The first half was a complete team performance, particularly for the backs who each showed their cunning and skill to evade their markers and run up a tally of tries.

Half-time: London Broncos 38 - 6 Castleford Tigers

The second 40 minutes was much the same. Substitute Bryony Cleall only took 30 seconds from the restart to get London’s next try, a staunch drive barely impeded by Tiger’s second rowers.

Jemma King started the game on the bench but was eager to put on a showcase in the opening of the second half. Exhibiting tidy footwork and guile she facilitated one try and scored her own to put London up 52-6 in the 56th minute.

Kennedy got her fourth try briefly after, a scintillating dash from 15 metres out. Emily Bell played a terrific defensive game and got her reward in the 68th minute when she seized a misplaced pass and streaked 50 metres to touch down- making the deficit 64 points.

Rebecca Smart bagged the last try of the game, an easy drive past the defeated Tigers to score with seconds left on the clock. All totalled the sixteen tries were split across nine different scorers reflecting a dominant team display.

Lauren Mueller was selected as Player of the Match by the opposition for her fantastic all-round performance, with some excellent powerful runs and a few tries to show for it.

With a decisive win, London Broncos remain top of the table on points difference, and just ahead of southern rivals Cardiff Demons who are hot on their tails in second.
