Northern Championship Round 9: Sheffield Eagles vs London Broncos

By London Broncos Women

In their first clash with Sheffield Eagles, the London Broncos secured a vital win in their penultimate Championship round before the playoffs.

The Broncos made a bright start in Sheffield, trading strong defensive sets with the Eagles before finally breaking the deadlock. Relentless attacking pressure was rewarded when Ellie Hunt-Pain (sponsored by LED ltd) touched down for the opening score, with Kathryn Salter (sponsored by Riley Bownes) adding the extras to make it 6–0.

London looked to push on, but handling errors began to creep in, allowing Sheffield possession deep in Broncos territory. The hosts struck back with two tries in the right-hand corner, edging ahead 8–6. Despite further attacking opportunities, including an 80m break from London’s fullback Lauren Mueller (sponsored by Amapolas Bakery), and a determined defensive effort to hold Sheffield up over the line, mistakes at key moments meant the Broncos went into the break trailing by two.

Half-Time: Sheffield 8 – 6 London

After regrouping, the Broncos came out firing. Building momentum through powerful carries, debutant Cheye Gustafson marked her first appearance with a determined try. Although the conversion was unsuccessful, London regained the lead 10–8. Moments later, Hunt-Pain struck again, stretching to ground her second try of the afternoon. Salter converted to push the Broncos clear at 16–8.

With Sheffield still asking questions, London dug deep defensively, producing a huge effort to deny the hosts. The decisive blow came late in the contest when Mueller broke through the line and raced under the posts. Salter added the extras to seal the result.

Full-Time: Sheffield 8 – 22 London Broncos
