Northern Championship Round 7: London Broncos vs Oulton Raidettes
By London Broncos Women
Broncos remain undefeated as they seal the deal against Oulton in the headline event of a fantastic day of Women’s and Girls’ Rugby League at Chiswick RFC.
London Broncos produced a commanding performance to secure a 34-10 victory over Oulton in a hard-fought contest. The home side tussled with their opposition in the early stages as both teams fought to gain a foothold in the game. There were errors on both sides, but it was London who eventually gained the upper hand.
Becky Smart, sponsored by Sally Bownes, was the star of the show in the opening 40 minutes, scoring two well-taken tries out wide. Kathryn Salter, sponsored by Riley Bownes, added two points, one of three successful conversions on the day, (although everyone but the referee seemed to think there was a fourth...) The Broncos controlled territory and tempo to keep Oulton on the back foot, and a fantastic goal-line defensive effort from the London side kept their opposition scoreless in the first half, going into the break with a 10-0 lead.
Half-time: London Broncos 10 - 0 Oulton Raidettes
It was London that came out firing after the break, opening the second half with an early score from Abi Ashby on her debut. With the Broncos on a roll, it wasn't long before Ashby crossed again for her second of the day. Taking advantage of the attacking momentum and a defeated Oulton defence, London's Rebecca Kemball, sponsored by South London Crabittohs, took the ball from the kick-off and ran the full length of the pitch to etch her name onto the scoreboard, followed by Salter's successful conversion.
Sian McLaughlin added to the Broncos' tally with a superbly timed run and powerful finish, taking the score to 30-10 after a resurgent Oulton had clawed back two tries of their own, one converted. Not content with her efforts, Smart finished the game with a flourish, completing her hat-trick with another excellent finish, after crisp attacking play exploited space on the edge.
Despite a few handling errors and defensive lapses, the Broncos' organisation and execution proved too much for Oulton to handle.
Final Score: London Broncos 34 - 10 Oulton Raidettes
Jade Walker, sponsored by Wests Warriors, was selected as Player of the Match by the opposition. Walker was instrumental in London's attack, providing leadership and consistency throughout the 80 minutes.
